From Your Professional Truckee River Flyfishing Guide
Winter is a challenging season to fly fish local waters. Flows are low and very cold. Dressing warmly and in waders that keep you dry is the first step. Wearing cotton is discouraged. I wear Patagonia Capalene as a base layer and then add a layer of ski-fleece, shirt and pants. I suggest two layers of socks and sometimes wear leg warmers over my calves. Fingerless gloves and a wind proof fleece hat are also standard gear. We get a lot of sunny days here in the winter so a wind breaker is often sufficient, but a heavier jacket and a vest is a good call on storm days. Always pack sunscreen and quality polarized sun glasses, (on a leash!). As crazy as fishing with snow on the river bank sounds, there are often bugs hatching and fish rising happily in a snow flurry. The only question is whether you are dressed to enjoy the experience.
This season there is little snow to worry about, so give it a go.....
